This early-maturing heirloom beetroot variety, Egyptian Flat Top, is prized for its smooth, wide, flat roots and deep crimson-purple flesh. It has a sweet, tender taste that’s especially popular with home gardeners and chefs alike. All seeds are 100% organic, ensuring healthy and natural growth.

Growing Conditions

Beetroot thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5 to 7.5). Avoid acidic soils or freshly manured ground to prevent misshapen roots. Full sun exposure promotes the best growth, though it tolerates part shade. Moist soil is key—keep consistent watering to avoid woody textures.

When and How to Sow

Sow Egyptian Flat Top beetroot seeds directly outdoors from March to July in Cork’s climate. Sow seeds about 2cm deep, spacing about 10 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart. Since beet seeds are clusters, thin seedlings when 5 cm tall to leave the strongest plant for optimal development. For a steady supply, sow seeds every 2-3 weeks.

Care and Harvest

Keep soil weed-free and water regularly, especially in dry spells. Apply an organic balanced fertilizer before sowing and optionally a nitrogen boost during growth. Start harvesting baby beets once roots reach golf-ball size, usually 7–10 weeks after sowing. Mature beets can be harvested when the root is 5–7 cm wide but avoid letting them get too large (~tennis ball size). Harvest before the first heavy frosts in autumn.

Container Growing

Egyptian Flat Top beetroot is well suited for containers—use a deep pot (at least 20 cm) with good quality organic compost. Ensure consistent moisture and adequate drainage. Container growing is ideal for small gardens or balconies.

This variety’s sweet flavour and reliable growth make it a fantastic choice for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. Enjoy fresh beetroot leaves and roots straight from your garden or container!
